The historic Lincoln Highway corridor, established more than a century ago, is intended to extend continuously between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. Completion of the Lincoln Highway/US 30 freeway east of Canton, Ohio, has been in the planning stages for years.  This project is important to the integrity of the National Highway System.   



 A four-lane US 30 expressway east of Canton will be much safer to drive on, especially for commercial trucks. The benefit cost analysis for this project found that the four-lane highway extension, avoiding the curves and tight turns of the existing two-lane Route 30 through East Canton, would save one life and avert over 150 injury accidents per year on average.  

Economic Development


Trucks currently avoid traveling on US 30 due to the diversion of traffic onto local roads east of Canton, Ohio.  Industry surveys show that, with greatly reduced travel time and safer conditions along the proposed freeway extension, truckers would choose this route.  This includes trucks serving the growing energy industry in the Marcellus and Utica shale area.  

Rural Communities


This transportation improvement project is important to rural and agricultural communities in Carroll, Columbiana and Stark counties, and to other rural communities in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.  Trucking is essential to the efficient movement of agricultural products and other goods to markets throughout the Appalachian Basin.   

Unique Financing


The RTIP is authorized under Ohio law to raise and borrow funds for the US 30 freeway extension project. This includes Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and the ability to collect tolls. In addition, Ohio law authorizes the RTIP to raise state and local funds for the project.

A “Shovel Ready” project


Extension of the four-lane Lincoln Highway/US 30 freeway east of Canton has been the subject of numerous environmental studies and state and local approvals, and is prioritized on the Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP). It complies with Federal Highway Administration project requirements and is ready to move forward.
